A Few Good Interns
In the past few days alone, FIRE has made great strides toward eliminating partisan orthodoxies and attacks on religious liberty on college campuses. These are truly exciting times in the fight for liberty—and all of us who have the good fortune to work here have front-row seats. Why do I point that out right now? Simple: because now is the time for any college student who wants to spend some time on the front lines of this crucial battle to apply for a FIRE summer internship.
As our summer internship webpage points out, we are looking for some very special undergraduate students. They should be “dynamic, energetic, responsible, and versatile individuals who possess a thorough understanding of FIRE’s mission and work.” They should have “[j]udgment, focus, organization, empathy, a commitment to civil liberties, an ability to work under pressure, and a sense of humor,” as well as “excellent research, writing, and communication skills.”
If you are a student like that—or if you know one—look no further than FIRE for an excellent summer internship opportunity. What we offer is indeed “substantive work,” and it takes place in a great environment—the heart of historic Philadelphia, right next to Independence Hall, in a warm and welcoming office into which the interns are fully integrated. Each intern spends approximately half his or her working hours undertaking crucial research for FIRE’s Spotlight: The Campus Freedom Resource; the rest is spent assisting a specific mentor on FIRE’s full-time staff with special projects. Beyond that, the internship also features frequent academic seminars with experts on individual rights on campus. The vast majority of former interns—of which I am one!—consider these sessions to be the highlight of the program.
But don’t just take my word for it—check out the testimonials we have posted. Former FIRE interns have called their experiences here “an education in liberty,” “extremely rewarding,” and “one of the most valuable experiences of [their] college years.” And those are just some tiny tidbits.
Oh, and did I mention that the internship is paid, to the tune of $800 per month, thanks to the very kind generosity of our donors?
The deadline for applications—March 31—is quickly approaching. We encourage any college student who loves liberty and wants to spend a summer protecting it to submit a cover letter, résumé, and two written recommendations to internships@thefire.org. Questions can be directed there, too.
