Courageous, rational leadership at university

March 1, 2006

My hearty congratulations to Kutztown University President F. Javier Cevallos. When radical leftists demanded free speech suppression of the College Republicans on his campus (The Morning Call, Feb. 24), he launched a principled defense of the individual right of free speech. Adhering to the best, classical-liberal tradition of open, honest debate, Cevallos arranged for a rational discussion of the controversial issue of affirmative action.

Radical leftist university administrators and faculty frequently assault free speech on campuses across America. The methods used include: speech codes, political correctness, ”dispositions theory” expulsion of non-leftist students, grading down of non-leftist students, and ”I’m offended” fascism. All of these immoral activities make it immensely refreshing to find an academic president showing such profound leadership and dedication to the enlightened principles of rational discourse and individual rights.

Radical leftists like Dr. Noam Chomsky try to limit the spectrum of campus ideas to leftist views. Chomsky said, ”The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum … ” In other words, if you limit ”acceptable opinions” on campus to only socialist, environmentalist, multi-culturalist, and communist perspectives, then you have forcibly suppressed non-leftist thoughts by ruling them ”unacceptable opinions.”

I donate money to the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) which files lawsuits against universities that violate the free speech and other individual rights of their students and faculty. I am happy that none of my funds will be needed for Kutztown University because of President Cevallos’ courageous, rational leadership.
