Over at Minding the Campus, be sure to check out the valuable discussion generated in response to FIRE Co-founder and Chairman Harvey Silverglate's article last week on illiberal trends in higher education. Boston Herald editor (and FIRE supporter) Tom Mashberg, for one, offered a trenchant quote from economist Walter Bagehot: "A bureaucracy is sure to think that its duty is to augment official power, official business, or official members, rather than to leave free the energies of mankind." On campus, where these energies are meant to be most free, bureaucrats have taken over, as Harvey's piece explains.
