Editorial Teaches Critics of the 'UNLV Civility Statement' about the True Purpose of Higher Education
Recently, the University of Nevada - Las Vegas (UNLV) released the "UNLV Civility Statement," which urges students to act civilly, but welcomes "unpopular and unsettling ideas" as an integral part of intellectual inquiry. In response, The Rebel Yell, UNLV's campus newspaper, published a misguided editorial that called upon the administration to punish acts of incivility. Today, the Las Vegas Review Journal ran an excellent response to The Rebel Yell, kindly reminding it that the purpose of higher education is not to proscribe ideas, but to foster an atmosphere of learning where students are exposed to widely varying viewpoints, including those that one might find "uncivil."
