FIRE and Speech Codes in ‘Reason’

By December 24, 2007

Reason Online has an article today decrying the continued existence of restrictive speech codes as a “persistent threat to liberty on college campuses.” The article points to FIRE’s recent finding that 75% of colleges and universities we surveyed maintain at least one policy that clearly and substantially restricts speech protected by the First Amendment, and highlights several of FIRE’s recent cases, including those at the University of Delaware and the University of Central Florida. The article concludes:

Thankfully there exist organizations such as FIRE who have assumed the role of protector of the First Amendment on campus, forcing universities, however incrementally, to roll back policies that violate students’ rights.
