FIRE Co-Founder to Speak Tonight at ADL Edward Brodsky Legal Conference

FIRE co-founder Harvey Silverglate will speak tonight in New York City at the Anti-Defamation League Edward Brodsky Legal Conference. Silverglate will appear on a panel entitled "Free Speech on the College Campus: What are the Limits?" with Floyd Abrams, Jennifer Raab, and Mari Matsuda.

Matsuda, a professor at Georgetown University Law Center, is most notable for her contributions to critical race theory. Indeed, her legal scholarship provided much of the academic and theoretical underpinning for the proliferation of campus speech codes in the 1980s and 90s. Judge Avern Cohn cited Matsuda's work in an addendum to his opinion in Doe v. Michigan, 721 F. Supp. 852 (E.D. Mich. 1989), writing somewhat cryptically that "an earlier awareness of Professor Matsuda's paper certainly would have sharpened the Court's view of the issues." Raab is president of Hunter College in New York. Abrams is an attorney and constitutional law expert.

The panel will be moderated by Adam Liptak, National Legal Correspondent for The New York Times. The event, which takes place at The New York Times Tower (242 West 41st Street), begins at 6:30 pm and is free and open to the public.
