Dear President Cole:

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education received no response to our letter to you of March 24, 2011, regarding the free speech rights of the group Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) at Montclair State University (MSU). Although MSU had stated to SDS that the student group would be responsible for the cost of extra security for its March 24, 2011, event-which would have violated the group’s First Amendment rights-we understand that the group has not been charged.

We presume that MSU has no intention of charging SDS for the extra security for the event. If this is incorrect, please inform us immediately.

Sincerely,

Peter Bonilla
Assistant Director, Individual Rights Defense Program
