FIRE Staff to Speak at Drexel, Bucknell, and UNC-Chapel Hill This Week

This week is a busy one for FIRE's speakers program. A FIRE staff member will lecture each night of the week.

Tonight at 6 p.m. I will be speaking in the Bossone Building in Mitchell Auditorium at Drexel University on the phenomenon of "Unlearning Liberty." This will be the first of three nights this week that FIRE will speak at Drexel for the Student Liberty Front's "Students Rights Week."

Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. FIRE Individual Rights Defense Program Director Adam Kissel will be sitting on a panel in the Forum of the Elaine Langone Center at Red Alert school Bucknell University to discuss the case of the Bucknell University Conservatives Club (BUCC), a group that was thrice censored by the university administration. Bucknell has only offered false justifications for its censorship of BUCC. Now administrators will have the chance to answer to FIRE face-to-face.

Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. FIRE Director of Speech Code Research Samantha Harris will speak at Drexel University on "Campus Speech Codes—Drexel and Surrounding Campuses." Drexel currently receives a yellow-light rating in FIRE's Spotlight database. It used to be a red light when its harassment policy prohibited "the use of derogatory names" and "inconsiderate jokes," earning it the dubious distinction of FIRE's Speech Code of the Month for September 2006. While Drexel, a private university, should be commended for revising this ridiculous policy, Drexel still has work to do to protect student speech. Samantha will discuss how it can do that.

Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Greg will speak at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. UNC-Chapel Hill has had a tumultuous last few months with controversy over a chapter of Students for Western Civilization because of its perceived political views. Fortunately, it seems that the university has stuck to its guns regarding free expression on campus.

Friday at 6:00 p.m. Adam will speak in the Bossone Building in Mitchell Auditorium at Drexel University on "Thought Reform" with a focus on the University of Delaware's infamous residence life program, wrapping up the Drexel Student Liberty Front's "Students Rights Week."

All events are free and open to the public. If you're in the area, please feel free to come out and listen to FIRE speak to students about their rights.
