Statement by FIRE President David French regarding Dartmouth Speech Policies

Category: Policies on Tolerance, Respect, and Civility, Statement School: Dartmouth College Statement Rating: Not Rated

Relevant excerpt

On May 2, 2005, Dartmouth General Counsel Robert B. Donin wrote FIRE a letter clearly indicating that certain speech-restrictive letters by President James Wright and Dean James Larrimore formerly on Dartmouth's website did not represent college policy and could not "be relied upon to support a complaint based on the content or viewpoint of controversial speech." As a consequence, Dartmouth no longer has a written speech code. FIRE is aware, however, of a fraternity, Zeta Psi, that was permanently derecognized in April, 2001, as a result of a speech-related incident. Until Zeta Psi is re-recognized, FIRE will continue to note this incident as an explicit qualifier to Dartmouth's green rating.
