FIRE’s ‘Guides’ to Student Rights Reach More Students with the Message of Liberty
FIRE’s Guides to Student Rights on Campus program has marked another successful year. Conceived as a series of handbooks to explain various aspects of students’ rights on campus, the program has blossomed into one of FIRE’s proudest accomplishments. Written in a clear, concise form, the Guides inform students of their constitutional rights on campus and offer advice on remedies when those rights are violated.
Anyone can download FIRE’s Guides from FIRE’s website free of charge and students can order free hard copies. The general public can order hard copies through Amazon.com.
Our records indicate that since January, students and citizens have downloaded 8,353 copies of FIRE’s Guide to Free Speech on Campus, 991 copies of FIRE’s Guide to Religious Liberty on Campus, 2,605 copies of FIRE’s Guide to Due Process and Fair Procedure on Campus, 922 copies of FIRE’s Guide to Student Fees, Funding, and Legal Equality on Campus, and 2,887 copies of FIRE’s Guide to First-Year Orientation and Thought Reform on Campus. These numbers only include people who have downloaded full copies of the Guides; thousands more have downloaded single chapters and sections of the Guides relevant to their specific situations.
Hard copies of FIRE’s Guides have also been distributed far and wide. Our records indicate that several thousand Guides have been mailed out from the FIRE office since January.
If FIRE’s Guides are “seeds of liberty,” as FIRE co-founder Alan Charles Kors calls them, then liberty has been sown in a many a mind this year.
