Harvey Silverglate’s Lecture at Brandeis Now Available on Multimedia Page

Last week, FIRE co-founder Harvey Silverglate spoke to a group of students and faculty at Brandeis University. His lecture, "The Death of Free Speech, Parody, and Vigorous Debate on Campus: Why Has It Happened, and What Is to Be Done?" is now available on our Multimedia page as a "FIREside Chats" podcast. In it, Harvey discusses parody, speech zones, and numerous cases dealing with expression on college campuses, including the recent controversy at Brandeis.

One of Brandeis's student papers, The Hoot, wrote a follow-up article on the lecture, citing several questions by students during the Q&A portion of the lecture. One student asked for Harvey's viewpoint on Provost Marty Krauss and the Brandeis administration's treatment of Professor Donald Hindley.

Silverglate responded, "the Provost shut down the proceedings when they weren't going the way she wanted. It should be reopened...I hope the spotlight stays on it until the Provost resigns in shame or reopens the case."

He concluded, "I think they intrude into the inner sanctity of someone's mind and soul...I don't think it's the role of the university for telling students how to feel."
