Re: "For Shame," Opinion, Jan. 28
While Will Evans has it right talking about how people need to think a little more about political discourse, I disagree on these points:
"Bear in mind that, as a private institution, Cornell is not legally obligated to provide us with the freedom of expression we have been given." The nonpartisan Foundation for Individual Rights in Education actually disagrees with him on the principle he's discussing -- while it might not be illegal, successful lawsuits have been filed against similar private schools for prohibiting speech such as this. And is it really rational to have to pay more money for less freedom?
Also, Mr. Evans, I'm not condoning the philosophy, but if segregation is racism, then what are the self-segregators of this campus in Ujamaa and the LLC who claim they feel safer when surrounded by people of their own race, and refer to these dorms as "havens"? (Note that I am not referring to the ones who simply like the dorm.)
