Equality Administration: Recognizing Sexual Harassment 07-08
Sexual harassment is any unwelcome behavior of a sexual nature.
Harassment can be expressed as sexual innuendos or comments, implied or overt threats, pressure for sexual favors, or "humor" that is gender-specific or sexual.
Sexual harassment can take the form of suggestive or insulting sounds, gestures, letters, e-mail, or phone calls. It can be leers, stares, pinups, posters, or calendars.

Sexual harassment includes, but is not limited to, physical or verbal abuse of a sexual nature including
graphic commentaries about an individual’s body, sexually degrading remarks used to describe an
individual, or unwelcome propositions and physical advances of a sexual nature.
Student Rights and Responsibilities: Harassment 07-08
Any words or acts, whether intentional or a product of the disregard for the safety, rights, or
welfare of others, which cause or result in physical or emotional harm to others, or which
intimidate, degrade, demean, threaten, haze or otherwise interfere with another person’s rightful
actions or comfort is prohibited.

Academic freedom requires an environment where intellectual pluralism and the free expression of ideas are embraced. The University of Miami, as an institution dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and charged with the duty of educating young adults from around the world, is committed to supporting the values of free speech, the rights of assembly and free association, and other basic civil liberties.

[T]he University will assure the right of students and approved student
organizations to demonstrate and publicly proclaim any view, however unpopular.

Spontaneous (non-planned) demonstrations are restricted to designated University of Miami free
speech zones.

Lewd, indecent or obscene conduct or expression, either oral or visual, and by whatever
means, on University owned or controlled property, or at University sponsored or
supervised functions is prohibited.

Students are prohibited from: [...] Creating language on a social network that is hateful, threatening, vulgar, or derogatory
or displaying or being displayed in an activity that violates federal, state, or local law
and/or any regulation outlined in the University of Miami Student Rights and
Responsibilities.
