Protected Group Harassment Policies (Learn More)

Spartan Life Student Handbook: Anti-Discrimination Policy 07-08
[T]he University community holds itself to certain
standards of conduct more stringent than those mandated by
law. Thus, even if not illegal, acts are prohibited under this
policy if they: [...] Harass any University community member(s) on the basis
of age, color, gender, gender identity, disability status,
height, marital status, national origin, political persuasion,
race, religion, sexual orientation, veteran status, or weight.
For the purpose of this Policy, the reference to “gender identity” shall be interpreted to include protection against gender stereotyping based
on a person’s gender expression. In other words, gender stereotyping is impermissible discrimination or harassment based on a failure to
conform to stereotypical gender norms.

Sexual Harassment Policies (Learn More)

Spartan Life Student Handbook: Policy on Sexual Harassment 07-08
Examples of Sexual Harassment
Many kinds of behavior may fit within the preceding definition
of sexual harassment. The following list is not
exhaustive. [...] • sexual advances, sexual propositions, or sexual
demands which are not agreeable to both parties
• unwelcome and persistent sexually explicit statements
or stories which are not legitimately related to employment
duties, course content, research, or other
University programs or activities
• repeatedly using sexually degrading words or sounds to
describe a person
• unwanted and unnecessary touching, patting, hugging,
or other physical contact
• recurring comments or questions about an individual’s
sexual prowess, sexual deficiencies, or sexual behavior
“Sexual harassment” means unwelcome sexual advances,
unwelcome requests for sexual favors, or other unwelcome
behavior of a sexual nature when: [...] such behavior is so severe, persistent, or pervasive that
a reasonable person would find that it:
a) alters the terms or conditions of a person’s employment
or educational experience, or
b) unreasonably interferes with an individual’s work or
performance in a course, program, or activity, thus
creating a hostile or abusive working or educational
environment.
[A] person’s subjective belief that behavior is offensive
does not make that behavior sexual harassment. The
behavior must also be objectively unreasonable.

Student Rights and Responsibilities at Michigan State University 07-08
Regulations shall respect the free expression of
ideas and shall encourage the competition of ideas
from diverse perspectives.
The basic purposes of the University are
the advancement, dissemination, and application of
knowledge. The most basic condition for the achievement
of these purposes is freedom of expression and
communication.Without this freedom, effective sifting
and testing of ideas cease, and research, teaching, and
learning are stifled.
The student is not only a member of the academic community,
but a citizen of the larger society, who retains
those rights, protections, and guarantees of fair treatment
held by all citizens, and which the University may not
deny.
