Introducing Summer Intern Sarah Klein

Sarah Klein is a rising junior at the University of Pennsylvania, where she majors in Political Science and minors in Gender, Culture & Society. Sarah is founder and president of Pre-Law Women at Penn. On why she chose to intern at FIRE, Sarah writes:

As a self-described Obama-voting liberal, feminist, and LGBT rights-supporter from New York, it probably seems that the current wave of politically correct speech codes is on my side. While I may wholeheartedly agree with the ideals of diversity and tolerance that this movement espouses, I strongly disagree with coercing people into adopting these ideals.  It is for this reason that I've chosen to intern with FIRE this summer.

As someone whose opinions and beliefs have frequently been challenged, I recognize the importance of protecting free speech for everyone, regardless of their affiliations. While power often shifts hands, the principles championed by the First Amendment are steadfast.  As Martin Niemoller famously penned,

First they came for the Communists, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up, because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me.

As a proud student at the University of Pennsylvania, a green-light university, I sincerely hope that I can assist FIRE in its efforts to convince red-light schools to change their unconstitutional policies.
