Rights in the News: FIRE Hits the Road as FIRE's Work Hits the News

Several FIRE staffers have been on the road this week spreading the word on our work defending the First Amendment rights of students and faculty across the country--and the week's events have given them plenty to talk about.

As the Associated Press reported earlier this week, FIRE's year-long stand at the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) has finally come to an end. CCAC's student government voted for the recognition of a campus chapter of the firearms advocacy group Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, hopefully relegating student Christine Brashier's struggles with the administration to the past.

FIRE's speech code research forms the core of a new report this week issued by the John William Pope Center for Higher Education Policy, which examines the speech codes of every public and private university in North Carolina. (Spoiler: they can do better.) And as I reported earlier in the week, learning from the Yale administration's mistakes in handling the "sissies" T-shirt controversy is an agenda item for Yale College Dean Mary Miller, as reported in the Yale Daily News. Read also Scott Jaschik's Inside Higher Ed article for FIRE's thoughts on the protests surrounding Michael Oren's visit to the University of California, Irvine.

Meanwhile, Adam has been touring sunny California, delivering lectures at California State University-Sacramento, California Polytechnic State University, and Merced College. Adam's lecture at Cal Poly--aided by advance press from the Cal Poly paper The Mustang Daily--was particularly well-attended, as shown on Roger Freberg's blog. (And why not? FIRE and Cal Poly do go way back, after all.) While in San Luis Obispo for his Cal Poly lecture, Adam also appeared on The Dave Congalton Show on KVEC radio; you can listen to the broadcast here. Meanwhile, a dispatch from Adam's Twitter account is fodder for Erica Perez's article for California Watch, about a controversial fraternity party at the University of California, San Diego. Read here for more of the details.

While Adam cruised up and down central California this week, Jen, Sean, and Luke have been in Washington, D.C., representing FIRE at this year's Conservative Political Action Conference. Any FIRE supporters in attendance have one more day to visit FIRE's table.
