UPDATE: Charges Against Swearing Professor Move Forward at University at Buffalo

Last week, FIRE promised to closely watch the case of Laura Curry, the SUNY Buffalo professor who was arrested for disorderly conduct after declaring that a pro-life display on campus was "profane" and asserting to a police officer her right to say the word "fuck" in public. FIRE followed up with an investigator from the university police, and we're disappointed to learn that the case against Curry is still moving forward.

As we have noted, Curry's speech captured on video is the same kind of profane language that the Supreme Court held protected in cases like Cohen v. California and Houston v. Hill. We hope that the reviewing court will respect Curry's First Amendment rights, and will have more information here on The Torch as it becomes available.
