Alex Morey Joins FIRE Staff as Editor-in-Chief of ‘The Torch’

FIRE is excited to welcome Alex Morey to our staff as editor-in-chief of FIRE’s award-winning blog, The Torch.

Alex is a 2013 graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School and earned a Master of Science degree in broadcast journalism from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in 2010. A proud native of Tucson, Arizona, she attended the University of Arizona, graduating cum laude with a B.A. in journalism and French in 2007. Alex also served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in rural Madagascar, where she taught English to middle and high-schoolers and collaborated with local reporters on free press and social media initiatives through the U.S. Embassy’s American Press Center.

Alex’s strong interest in the First Amendment and free press jurisprudence links her work as both an attorney and a journalist: As a graduate student, she was a researcher at Syracuse’s Tully Center for Free Speech, and she worked as a broadcast journalist filing reports from Washington, D.C. to NBC-affiliate KFDX in Wichita Falls, Texas. In law school, she served as a teaching assistant to Professor Donald Downs, noted First Amendment scholar and friend of FIRE. Most recently, Alex worked as an attorney at Dane County Circuit Court and Fiskars Brands, Inc. in Madison, Wisconsin. She is a member in good standing of the New York State Bar Association and the State Bar of Wisconsin. She lives in Northern Virginia with her husband, two sons, and a French bulldog named Mr. Tappy Toes.

We’re happy to have Alex put her background in journalism and First Amendment law to good use here at FIRE. Welcome, Alex!
