Alice Dreger's keynote address on academic freedom at FIRE's 2017 faculty conference

Alice Dreger is an historian of medicine and science, a sex researcher, a mainstream writer, and a self-described (im)patient advocate. Dreger delivered the keynote address at the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education's 2017 Faculty Conference in Dallas, Texas, on October 7, 2017.

Dreger is the author of “Galileo’s Middle Finger: Heretics, Activists, and One Scholar’s Search for Justice,” which was named an "Editor's Choice" by The New York Times Book Review.

The wide-ranging keynote and discussion at FIRE's conference touched on the cases chronicled in "Galileo's Middle Finger," Dreger's fight against censorship by the administration of Northwestern University, which led her to resign her position in its medical school, the threat posed by university administrations to academic freedom and shared governance, and much more.
