Loyal Torch readers know that former FIRE President David French stepped down last fall in order to join the U.S. Army Reserve (the Chronicle of Higher Education wrote an article on this with a title that I thought was particularly appropriate: FIRE's President Steps Down to ‘Step Up’). I recently spoke with him and learned that on April 11, he was officially sworn in as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve and will begin basic training for the Judge Advocate General's Corps by May 28. Congratulations David!

I also think it is great that as part of his oath he had to promise to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States.” In my humble opinion, David has been doing that for our campuses for a long time!
