Announcing FIRE’s 2019 Regional Conference: Freedom of the Press

FIRE is thrilled to announce that this year’s Regional Conference, themed “Freedom of the Press,” will take place on Oct. 18–19, 2019 in Chicago, Illinois.

This special event will offer students a chance to explore the First Amendment with a special focus on how it relates to student journalists and student media.

Whether you are a student journalist or have just written a single op-ed, this event will provide the opportunity to build on your journalistic foundations in order to advance a key element of the First Amendment — freedom of the press.

This conference will bring together college students from coast to coast and across the ideological spectrum who share a passion for the First Amendment. Attendees will participate in dynamic, interactive workshops hosted by FIRE staff members covering topics like social media and the First Amendment, threats to student journalism, how to effectively communicate with administrators, and many other issues at the intersection of media and campus life. Students will be equipped with knowledge of the First Amendment, gain skills to protect and celebrate their civil liberties, and develop ideas to implement change on campus.

FIRE’s Regional Conference is free to attend and open to current students, including graduate students, at U.S. colleges and universities. Housing on Friday, Oct. 18 and meals will be provided for all attendees. A travel reimbursement of up to $200 will be available to help students travel to and from the conference.
