Announcing FIRE’s Spring Regional Workshop! Election 2016—Campaigning on Campus

We are thrilled to announce the FIRE Regional Workshop, which will take place at Yale University on Saturday, April 9, 2016.

This one-day event offers students a crash course on the First Amendment, with an emphasis on how important its protections are to this year’s presidential campaign. Students will leave with the knowledge, strategies, and resources to assert their free speech and assembly rights on campus.

This election cycle, FIRE has already come to the aid of students whose free speech rights were under attack. Campus censorship of political speech is not something new for the 2016 presidential election; FIRE has long advocated on behalf of students who were prevented from engaging in political speech on campus. In fact, censorship of such expression by college administrators is so prevalent that FIRE releases a statement each national election cycle that reminds students and faculty of their rights—and puts colleges on notice about their obligations to abide by the First Amendment or their promises of freedom of expression during election season.

Attendees at our workshop will learn about the history of censorship on campus and the forces at play in the current struggle against restrictive speech codes. Participants will also work closely with FIRE staff to develop winning strategies to campaign with confidence that the First Amendment will protect their right to speak and be heard—not just during campaign season, but every day.

Three meals will be provided throughout the day, and attendees will have the chance to network with staff and other participants at the post-workshop social.

If you’re an active member of a political group on campus or have been the subject of administrative censorship or overbearing bureaucracy, this is your chance to learn how to fight back. Space is limited, so apply today!
