2021 FIRE summer interns.

FIRE is excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for our 2022 summer internship!

Our internship program invites students from across the country to spend their summer in Philadelphia working directly with FIRE’s staff defending civil liberties on America’s college campuses.

FIRE is looking for intelligent and energetic undergraduates (rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors) attending colleges or universities in the United States who are eager to engage in free speech activism on campus.

This year, applications will be reviewed and considered in two groups:

  • The early decision deadline is Friday, Jan. 28, 2022
  • The regular decision deadline is Friday, March 4, 2022

FIRE usually selects 8-10 interns and plans to fill more than half of the spots from the early decision pool. Our internship is highly competitive, with an acceptance rate of 3% for both 2020 and 2021.

Ideal candidates are responsible, focused, organized, have a passion for civil liberties, and have a history of taking action in support of causes in which they believe. All interns are expected to demonstrate excellent research, writing, and communication skills. The ability to work under pressure and with a sense of humor is also important.

In addition to attending weekly educational seminars with experts in the field to discuss the moral, philosophical, and legal foundations of civil liberties, interns will write about FIRE cases and issues for our website, assist with planning and running our annual student summer conference, and develop strategies for defending free speech when they return to campus.

The 10-week program runs from Tuesday, May 31, through Friday, Aug. 5, and interns receive a $4,000 stipend. The internship program is based in our office in historic Philadelphia, just steps from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.
