Back to School: Don’t Forget Classic FIRE Resources

As students and faculty head back to school, they should remember that FIRE still offers the same classic resources we have offered for years. On Friday, I highlighted FIRE's Guides to Student Rights on Campus program. Students should also be aware of other long-running FIRE resources.

FIRE's Spotlight: The Campus Freedom Resource provides up-to-date information on speech codes at over 350 colleges and universities across the country. It is the most comprehensive database of campus speech codes in existence.

Later this fall, FIRE will release its annual speech code report, Spotlight on Speech Codes 2009: The State of Free Speech on Our Nation's Campuses. This report will be the most extensive one to date, providing quantitative data on schools with speech codes and demonstrating the extent to which speech codes infringe upon students' and faculty members' rights. Reports from the last two years have revealed that an overwhelming majority of schools explicitly prohibit speech that, outside the borders of campus, is protected by the First Amendment. Readers should stay tuned to learn about the current state of free speech across college campuses and to learn which schools' ratings have gone up or down.

Finally, if you learn of any violations of individual rights on campus, submit a case to FIRE. We will investigate as necessary and do what we can to bring justice in the case.

Of course, keep reading The Torch for the latest updates on the state of liberty on campus and on FIRE's efforts to defend individual rights in education.
