On July 14, 2020, the State University of New York at Binghamton announced a plan to address campus sexual assault in part by automatically suspending “Greek life organizations that are connected in any way to a sexual assault case, immediately at the time that the sexual assault is reported, with permanent removal of recognition to follow an investigation supporting the report.” On January 8, 2021, FIRE wrote to SUNY Binghamton, explaining that the proposal, if adopted, would imperil the core due process right to a hearing prior to punishment. On January 12, 2021, the university assured FIRE it will not implement the proposal.
