In December 2020, students at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) sought recognition of a Students for a National Health Program (SNaHP) chapter, a group dedicated to advocating for single-payer health systems. The EVMS Student Government Association rejected the group in January 2021, explaining that it “does not want to create clubs based on opinions, political or otherwise, and the mission and goals of your club do not describe what we believe to be necessary or sustainable for a club.” FIRE wrote to EVMS on February 2, explaining the First Amendment prevents the public college from rejecting student groups over their political advocacy and calling on the college to recognize SNaHP.
