Case Overview

In June 2022, the Indiana University School of Medicine revised its tenure and promotion standards to require faculty to write statements showing their efforts to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion. On July 11, FIRE wrote IUSM explaining the requirement threatens academic freedom by coercing faculty seeking tenure and promotion to demonstrate their commitment to prescribed ideological views. After IUSM failed to respond, FIRE sent a follow-up letter on August 8, urging the medical school to eliminate or revise the policy to respect faculty members’ expressive rights.
