On November 7, 2020, University of Miami School of Law Dean Anthony Varona suggested that he would not renew the contract of law school lecturer Daniel B. Ravicher due to his controversial tweets about the 2020 election. FIRE wrote to the university on November 20, explaining that the university’s promises of academic freedom and free expression protect Ravicher’s right to engage in extramural expression of his political views, and calling for the university to disclaim any suggestion that Ravicher’s extramural speech might result in the nonrenewal of his contract. Varona’s December 5 response to FIRE failed to do so.
