CFN Works With Student Journalists

I am in Washington, D.C., today to speak with student journalists about the problem of campus censorship and how the student press can play an important role in fighting back against illiberal campus adminstrations and policies.

The roughly 20 student journalists here each represent newly formed student newspapers and are in D.C. as part of the Collegiate Network's "Start the Presses" workshop. The Collegiate Network helps provide mentoring and grants to over one hundred independent student newspapers across the country.

Some of the assembled students represent papers that have been connected to FIRE cases in the past. I have already had the chance to meet some great students from The Minuteman from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, The Lamplighter from the University of Delaware, and a new paper connected to the Burke Society at the University of Virginia. Torch readers will remember our victory against campus censors at UMass, our assistance in making sure that The Lamplighter could distribute on the UD campus, and our effort to ensure that UVA allowed the Burke Society to exist.

As a former student journalist, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to interact with these dedicated students and provide them with the resources they need to fight for free speech on campus.
