Coming Soon: FIRE’s New First Amendment Library and Legal Internship

FIRE is pleased to announce our plan to create a free online First Amendment library, envisioned to serve as the preeminent research tool for anyone looking to learn more about the First Amendment. The library, set to launch this fall, will be accessible to everyone: from the high school student working on an essay, to the lawyer researching Supreme Court precedent.

The library will feature a complete collection of every Supreme Court opinion dealing with First Amendment issues to date. This case archive will be updated as new cases are decided and categorized to ensure optimal searchability. Building on this foundation, FIRE will seek to create an ever-expanding collection of scholarly resources and original content.

Noted First Amendment scholar Ronald Collins will serve as the library’s editor-in-chief. Collins is the Harold S. Shefelman Scholar at the University of Washington School of Law and a former scholar for the First Amendment Center. He is on the editorial board of the Supreme Court news website SCOTUSblog and runs his own blog, First Amendment News, in conjunction with Concurring Opinions. Professor Collins is also the author of many books and numerous scholarly articles on the First Amendment.

If you are interested in working on this project, FIRE is looking for a legal intern to help curate and expand the site’s content. The internship is open to rising second- and third-year law students, recent law school graduates, and specialists in First Amendment law. Other responsibilities will include helping compile First Amendment decisions and other resources to create a model First Amendment course book.

This project would not be possible without the generous support of The Stanton Foundation. As the former president of CBS, the late Frank Stanton was committed to creating a more informed citizenry through the preservation of First Amendment rights, a goal that this library will help to further. Look for the latest developments regarding the library here on The Torch!
