Connecticut High School Student Files Suit Alleging Free Speech Violations

According to an Associated Press report, a high school student in Connecticut has brought suit against school officials “saying they violated her constitutional rights by removing her as class secretary because she used offensive slang to refer to administrators on an Internet blog.”

While FIRE does not directly handle cases involving high school students, there is no question that the earlier and more thoroughly students are educated about their constitutional rights, the better they are able to recognize and challenge violations of those rights, in high school, college, and beyond. FIRE will be following this case with interest and will keep readers updated.
