Defending Unpopular Speech on Campus: Q&A with Student Jason Willick
Meet Jason Willick, a former FIRE summer intern and student at Stanford University.
Jason writes for Stanford’s student newspaper, The Stanford Daily, and serves as editor-in-chief of the Stanford Political Journal. In this video, Jason describes what it means to believe in and support freedom of speech, and he shares his experiences with censorship on campus.
Like any true free speech advocate, Jason doesn’t hesitate to defend the rights of those with whom he disagrees. “You’ve got to separate your own personal opinions from the principles of freedom of speech and civil liberties,” says Jason.
Since completing a summer internship with FIRE and attending the 2014 FIRE Student Network Conference, Jason has ramped up his advocacy for free speech and due process, using his role as a campus journalist to defend student rights.
