'Empty Holsters' Another Big Hit on YouTube

FIRE's short film Empty Holsters: Gun Speech on America's Campuses has now exceeded 23,000 views on YouTube. One of our most popular videos in our fight for free speech on college campuses, Empty Holsters highlights the widespread censorship of student dialogue and debates regarding carrying guns on campus, debates that gained new immediacy after more than 30 people were murdered at Virginia Tech in 2007.

The video showcases students who stood up for their right to discuss these issues in the face of challenges to their First Amendment rights, such as the members of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus (SCCC) at Tarrant County College (TCC) in Texas. TCC lost a First Amendment lawsuit after enforcing its "free speech zone" policy against SCCC and then aiming to ban SCCC's Empty Holster Protests under a "cosponsorship" policy that a federal court also found unconstitutional. One SCCC member, Clayton Smith, appeared last night on Fox Business Network's Stossel along with FIRE president Greg Lukianoff to discuss SCCC's case and other free speech issues on campus.
