Demonstration on the College Plaza, August 17, 2011

Demonstrations on the College Plaza are permitted in a manner that is consistent with the requirements of County Ordinance 238-1984 and the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Section 4(f) of the County Ordinance states that "No person shall, at any facility: Interfere with, encumber or obstruct passage to any entranceway or exit of a facility." Section 2(a) of County Ordinance 238-1984 defines "facility" to include Nassau Community College. Demonstrators may exercise their rights under the First and Fourteenth Amendments in a manner that does not impinge upon the State interest in preventing interference with or obstruction to any entranceway or exit of the buildings abutting the College Plaza or the pathways to those entrances and exits. Therefore, in pursuit of the goal of protecting the safety of the students, faculty, staff, administrators and campus visitors, the following activities relating to a demonstration are permitted on the College Plaza:

Individuals may distribute leaflets or carry signs in the College Plaza, provided, however, that not more han two individuals may distribute leaflets or carry signs immediately proximate to the entrance/
exitway of each building abutting the College Plaza, provided, further, that in doing so they do not
interfere, encumber [or] obstruct the entranceway or exit of any building.
