FIRE Co-Presenting Facebook.com ‘Webinar’ Tomorrow

Tomorrow from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. Eastern, FIRE supporters can participate in an online webinar from the Council on Law in Higher Education entitled “Facebook and Other Social Networking Sites” co-presented by FIRE’s own Samantha Harris.

The online conference will discuss issues like those we have seen in cases at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where students’ rights were called into question after posting controversial speech on Facebook.com. The presentation will examine specific examples of how institutions have addressed student postings on these sites, the extent to which institutions can and should go to monitor these sites, the privacy implications of posting speech online, and the steps institutions should take to educate students about using these sites.

The webinar, which is co-presented by Shawn McGuirk, the director of Judicial Affairs, Mediation and Education at Fitchburg State College, is an excellent resource for student affairs professionals, judicial affairs officers, attorneys, university administrators, and FIRE allies interested in student rights on campus. The class is a chance to hear presenters over the phone and simultaneously view the presentation on the computer, and it will include a question and answer period for guests to respond to the information provided.

Anyone interested can go to the official site for the webinar for registration info.
