FIRE Launches Multimedia Project on Website

PHILADELPHIA, February 6, 2008The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) announces a new Multimedia Project, beginning with a video directed and produced by "Indoctrinate U" director Evan Coyne Maloney and Andrew Marcus. FIRE's Multimedia Project will include regular installments of original video content, podcasts, and a video contest for college students.

"I invite everyone to take a moment to watch our new video, FIRE on Campus, on our new multimedia page," FIRE President Greg Lukianoff said. "Over the next year we plan to add additional exciting and interactive content to our website as part of our mission to get the message out about the threats to liberty on campus."

FIRE on Campus is a fourteen-minute video that introduces viewers to FIRE, its principles and issues, and its battle against campus speech codes. It then turns to FIRE's victory at San Francisco State University, where, with FIRE's help, students were vindicated after enduring a months-long investigation for stomping on Hamas and Hezbollah flags during an anti-terrorism protest.

Upcoming video releases will include short films discussing individual FIRE cases and a second episode of the award-winning public television series Voices of Vision featuring FIRE. The first Voices of Vision episode about FIRE, entitled "Make No Law: Protecting Individual Rights on Campus," is also available now on the multimedia page.

In the coming months, FIRE will unveil additional multimedia content, including regular videos and podcasts. FIRE will also announce its first-ever video contest, an initiative designed to encourage students across the country to submit their own videos about the state of liberty on their own campuses. FIRE will be looking for short videos dealing with issues ranging from speech zones to speech codes to abuses of due process, private conscience, and free speech. FIRE plans to announce a contest winner in late 2008.

"FIRE has always followed Justice Louis Brandeis's maxim that sunlight is the best disinfectant," Lukianoff said. "Through the comprehensive use of video and the interactivity made possible by the Internet, we hope to expand our efforts to bring real change to campus, and challenge threats to student and faculty rights everywhere. FIRE supporters should remain on the lookout for more exciting content in the weeks to come."

FIRE is a nonprofit educational foundation that unites civil rights and civil liberties leaders, scholars, journalists, and public intellectuals from across the political and ideological spectrum on behalf of individual rights, due process, freedom of expression, academic freedom, and rights of conscience at our nation's colleges and universities. FIRE's efforts to preserve liberty on campuses across America can be viewed at thefire.org.
