FIRE Staff to Present at Newseum’s ‘Free Speech on Campus’ Conference

This Saturday, FIRE will be represented among the featured speakers at the Newseum Institute’s “Free Speech on Campus” Conference in Washington, D.C. The full-day event, which runs from 8:15 a.m. EDT to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 2, is the first in a three-part Newseum project covering issues related to free speech on college campuses.

FIRE President and CEO Greg Lukianoff will speak at the event, and Peter Bonilla, director of FIRE’s Individual Rights Defense Program, will be on a panel focused on “‘Framing the discussion’ on campus speech: How did we get to this point?” Other panelists include the Newseum Institute’s First Amendment Ombudsman, David Hudson; Lyle Muller, executive director-editor of IowaWatch’s 2016 project on campus speech; and Fanta Wa, Assistant Vice President for Campus Life at American University. Several students will also discuss their experiences.

Conference attendees are slated to include students, administrators, instructors and professors, and free speech experts.

In addition to panels, roundtable discussions, and presentations from First Amendment experts, the conference will include a sneak peek of the results of a Knight Foundation/Newseum Institute-sponsored Gallup survey on college students’ attitudes towards free speech and diversity issues. Those results will be formally released on Monday, April 4.

For the last two parts of its project on freedom of speech and expression on college campuses, the Newseum will hold a student project fair to encourage campus free expression and will publish a guide to “Free Expression on Campus.”
