FIRE Targets ‘Red Alert’ Schools in ‘US News and World Report’

As described in this morning's press release, the 2009 "America's Best Colleges" edition of U.S. News and World Report hit newsstands today. For the first time, the issue includes a full-page FIRE advertisement that features the five schools on FIRE's Red Alert listBrandeis University, Colorado College, Johns Hopkins University, Tufts University, and Valdosta State University. These notorious schools earned themselves the dubious Red Alert distinction because of their ongoing disregard for the fundamental rights of their students or faculty members.

As FIRE often points out, schools cannot defend in public the injustices they commit in private. This advertisement exposes some of these injustices and provides prospective students and parents with the warnings they deserve. Students should think twice before choosing to attend Red Alert schools. On quite possibly the best platform to reach this audience (last year's U.S. News edition reached more than 2 million people), the advertisement appears on page 79, directly adjacent to the top undergraduate school rankings. How better to get the word out?

This ad is just one of the many ways FIRE plans to continue exposing the "worst of the worst" offenders when it comes to liberty on campus. School administrators, take note: If you deny your students and faculty members their fundamental rights, be aware that FIRE will do what it takes to ensure that your school honors its legal and moral obligations. FIRE supporters, find a copy of the issue, check out FIRE's press release, and start spreading the word about FIRE's Red Alert schools today!
