After a one-year hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a successful return in 2021, we’re pleased to announce that the 2022 FIRE Faculty Network Conference will be heading to Los Angeles this fall — our conference’s first trip to the west coast!

The conference will take place from Oct. 20–22 at the University of Southern California, with main sessions taking place Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21 and 22.

FIRE’s Faculty Network Conference centers on presentations submitted for consideration through a call for proposals. As in past years, we seek papers and discussions on topics relevant to today’s discussions and debates on free expression and academic freedom in American higher education.

Faculty and PhD candidates are invited to submit proposals for paper presentations at the 2022 conference, and this year, FIRE is pleased to consider proposals for fully-assembled panel discussions.

This conference is by design highly interdisciplinary, and faculty in all disciplines are invited to apply. The scholarship presented at FIRE’s conferences takes many forms, from quantitative research to more free-form critical narratives, and we seek to represent a wide range of viewpoints and methodologies. Topics may be examined through the lens of a particular field or discipline, or in the context of higher education more broadly.

Faculty whose papers are selected for presentation will receive an honorarium of $3,000, in addition to reimbursement for travel and lodging, for the completion and presentation of their conference paper.

The deadline to submit proposals is June 30, 2022, and we encourage interested faculty to submit early for the best chance at consideration.

We will open the general attendee application later in the spring, and we will keep readers and supporters updated on any developments.

Faculty interested in presenting at or attending the conference are highly encouraged to join FIRE’s Faculty Network, where they will not only have conference updates sent right to their inboxes, but will also have an inside track on new FIRE tools and resources.

We look forward to reviewing your proposals and hope you’ll join us in Los Angeles this fall!
