FIRE’s Greg Lukianoff Among ‘Top Minds’ Featured at U. Chicago Free Speech Event

The University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics will host FIRE President and CEO Greg Lukianoff next Wednesday, March 9, at its event, “The Battle Over Free Speech on College Campuses,” starting at 6 p.m. CST.

The event is part of a series by the nonpartisan Institute of Politics that seeks to bolster students’ political engagement on critical topics by bringing together “the top minds in the country.”

Greg will be joined by Colby College Professor and Salon and New Republic contributor Aaron Hanlon, The Atlantic Editorial Fellow Adrienne Green, and University of Chicago Law School Professor Geoffrey Stone, whom Torch readers may remember was instrumental in crafting the FIRE-endorsed “Chicago Statement” on freedom of expression. Catherine J. Ross, a law professor at George Washington University Law School and author, will moderate as panelists answer the following questions:

Is the First Amendment under attack on college campuses? The Atlantic, Salon, The  New York Times, and The Washington Post have all published pieces about the complex balance between free speech and political correctness on college campuses. 2015 was a pivotal year for this discussion across the country and leaves Americans wondering: How did we get here?  Where do you draw the line, if any, between First Amendment rights and offensive speech?  Are speech codes and safe spaces needed on campuses?  And what responsibility do colleges have to create a climate that encourages an open and respectful exchange of ideas?

Tickets are free and available to the public, but space is limited, so reserve your spot today!
