Collection of Personal Information
Many pages on the Websites may be visited without revealing any personal information. In some instances, additional information is required in order to provide the services that you request.
In order to keep constituents updated about FIRE’s current programs and activities, FIRE offers subscriptions to our electronic mailing lists free of charge. FIRE currently sends this information via email and fax. The only information we require is your first and last name, email address (or facsimile number), city, and state. You may provide other demographic information which will allow us to provide more personalized information. If at any time you wish to change your preferences (including your removal from distribution lists), you may do so by using the contact information provided above. We will process changes in a timely manner.
FIRE stores the information that we collect to create a profile of our users. This information is kept in order to provide information about FIRE and may be used for solicitation purposes. We do not share, sell, or otherwise distribute email or fax information. FIRE does not sell aggregate or specific personal information to outside firms, public or private.
Information submitted to FIRE for purposes of joining FIRE’s Legal Network (other than a successful applicant’s name and contact information) is used solely to ensure the eligibility of an applicant to provide legal guidance, and to determine how FIRE may best utilize an individual’s abilities to aid students or faculty members, as needed. Members of the legal network will be notified of cases via email so that they may determine if they would like to assist.

This feature of the Websites requires that you submit your email address, as well as one or more recipient email addresses. These data are used only to send the information requested, and are not stored or retained in any form by FIRE. For security purposes and abuse protection, your IP address is reported to the recipient in the header section of the communication.
FIRE makes use of log files through the Websites. Log files track information about how the Websites are being viewed. This information includes IP address, browser type, platform type, referring pages, dates and times, and other broad demographic information. None of this data is linked to any personally identifiable information. Data collected in log files is used only in aggregate form to help analyze trends and to administer the site.
Although we make every effort to preserve user privacy, we may need to disclose personal information if we determine that we are required to do so under local, state, or federal law, regulations, current judicial proceeding, a court order, or other legal process.
The Websites contain links to other sites for your convenience. FIRE is not responsible for the availability, accuracy, or content of those outside sites, nor do we endorse them. Furthermore, FIRE is not responsible for the privacy practices of such sites. Any information you share on such sites is not subject to the terms and conditions contained in this Agreement. We encourage our users to use caution when they leave the Websites and to read the privacy statements of other sites, as they may that collect personally identifiable information.
FIRE takes reasonable precautions to protect our users’ information. When sensitive information is submitted via the Websites, FIRE endeavors to protect it both online and offline. We cannot assure you that private information that you intend to keep confidential as between yourself and FIRE via email will never be disclosed in a manner that is inconsistent with this Agreement. No Internet transmission is ever 100 percent secure or error-free. You should therefore take special care in deciding what information you send via email. Once FIRE obtains information that is intended to be treated as confidential, we use our best efforts to keep that information secure from third parties. We cannot guarantee that private information sent to us will never be seen by an unrelated third party.
When our online donation form asks for sensitive information, such as credit card numbers, the information is encrypted and is protected with a technology called Secure Socket Layer (SSL).
FIRE reserves the right to amend or change this Agreement at any time and it may be modified without notice. You will be bound by any changes to this Agreement. Please check regularly for modifications. The current Agreement is posted on www.thefire.org, www.speechcodes.org, and www.thefireguides.org.
FIRE maintains an action plan for dealing with breaches in data security. In the event of unauthorized access of personal information, FIRE will endeavor, where practical, to notify in writing each subscriber whose information was so accessed in the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay.
Please understand that your use of any information FIRE shares, on the Websites or otherwise, is at your own risk. All of the information we provide on the Websites, or otherwise, is intended to provide general information for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for consultation with an attorney. Any information FIRE shares with you is not intended to be, and should not be interpreted as legal advice. Our hope is that through the information we provide, we can raise awareness into issues that affect civil liberties.

You agree that you will hold FIRE and each of its officers, directors, agents, employees and volunteers harmless from all claims arising out of, or related to, your use of any information that FIRE shares with you. You also agree to hold FIRE and each of its officers, directors, agents, employees and volunteers harmless from any and all claims arising out of, or related to, directly or indirectly, your access or use of, or your inability to access or use, the Websites, the information contained on the Websites, or other websites to which it is linked.
