Free Speech Battle at College of Staten Island
Recently, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals handed down a decision favorable to student free speech rights in a decade-old case at the College of Staten Island (CSI). In the ruling, the court found that CSI’s president violated a student newspaper’s free speech rights by cancelling a student government election after the paper had endorsed a slate of candidates. The college administration justified the decision by stating that the endorsement violated election rules and gave the endorsed candidates an unfair advantage.
Unless CSI seeks further appellate review, the case will be remanded for a hearing on damages. FIRE will continue to monitor this case.
