Greg on Campus: FIRE President and CEO to Speak at North Carolina Universities

FIRE President and CEO Greg Lukianoff will talk about freedom of speech on college campuses at three North Carolina universities this week. All three appearances are free and open to the public.

On Wednesday, April 6, Greg will deliver the capstone address at High Point University’s (HPU’s) inaugural “First Amendment Day,” where he will discuss recent campus free speech controversies “that raise questions about the proper balance between the right to free speech on campus and the need to be politically sensitive to others, particularly minority students.” The speech will begin at 7 p.m. EDT.

Then, on Thursday, April 7, at 12:30 p.m., Greg will be a featured speaker at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Speaker Ban Law Speaker Series. The series is part of a 50th anniversary commemoration of the protests over North Carolina’s divisive Speaker Ban Law, which prevented Communists and other “subversive” speakers from speaking at public universities in the state. According to UNC, the Speaker Ban Law Speaker Series is “meant to engage students, faculty, and staff in critical conversations happening in higher education.” The event also seeks to facilitate consideration of various viewpoints and “challenge the traditional understandings of these issues.” Greg’s talk, “Freedom From Speech: Defending the Marketplace of Ideas on American College Campuses,” will be followed by a question-and-answer period.
