Introducing FIRE Summer Intern Maggie Rackl

Maggie Rackl is in her final year at the College of Charleston, where she majors in History with a minor in Asian Studies. She has served as president of the Arabic Club and is currently a resident assistant. On why she came to FIRE, she writes:

Throughout my college career I have often felt like an unwelcome outcast because I held political beliefs that often times stood in direct opposition to the unspoken but omnipresent college-mandated platform. In FIRE I see a unique organization in which I can utilize my interests in the field of politics and current events, as well as my experiences at my own campus, in order to contribute to reaching the goals of the organization.

As a volunteer aboard the USS Yorktown at Patriot's Point Naval and Maritime Museum in Charleston, I have absorbed much from the many World War II, Korea, and Vietnam veterans who also volunteer their time. These interactions have reinforced my belief in the importance of political as well as community involvement. We must never forget that many Americans have fought and died for the freedoms we enjoy daily. No matter what one's opinion may be of the state of the union, the need to preserve the rights and liberties enshrined in our constitutional order by the pens of the founders is essential and I am proud to assist FIRE in ensuring this preservation.
