Grappling With Its Identity, MIT Shuts A Dorm For Misfits

On Friday, June 8, Apple chief executive Tim Cook gave the commencement speech at MIT, my alma mater. He talked about the need to “empower the crazy ones—the misfits, the rebels and the troublemakers, the round pegs and the square holes—to do the best work.” The goal? “Really change the world.” The following Monday, MIT decided to shut down one of its training grounds for misfits and rebels, a dorm called Senior House, because of concerns about low graduation rates, drug use and “credible information regarding dangerous behavior.”…
