IOWA CITY, IA (CBS2/FOX28) – University of Iowa President Sally Mason says she’s going to spend her winter break clarifying the school’s policies on public space used for public expression. This comes after a controversial statue of a Klansman was put up on the Pentacrest without school approval. On Wednesday the Foundation of Individual Rights in Education and the National Coalition Against Censorship called on the school to “affirm the first amendment rights of the artist.” On Thursday Mason sent a letter to students and staff and said she will look over the rules for putting displays up. She will be working through the issues with the school’s diversity office. The policy and any changes will be announced before the spring semester.
