National Board of Censorship Is Formed

By March 15, 1909

The National Board of Censorship (later renamed the National Board of Review) is formed at the request of exhibitors to stave off calls for statutory censorship. Financed by the movie industry and staffed by culturally liberal progressives, it never satisfied pro-censorship activists.
