When you use e-mail, chat rooms, or other forms of network communications, you will be expected to follow the generally accepted rules of network etiquette. They include:

1. Politeness: Since messages are easily forwarded and distributed widely, never assume that a message you send is private. Because your Internet communications will originate from the University, you will be–as it were–representing the University to others. Users should refrain from using language considered in society to be obscene, vulgar, or abusive in online communications.
