Now Available for Pre-Order: ‘Unlearning Liberty: Campus Censorship and the End of American Debate’ by FIRE President Greg Lukianoff

I am extremely excited to announce that my book, Unlearning Liberty: Campus Censorship and the End of American Debate, is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com. The book will be formally released by our publisher, Encounter Books, on October 23, but from now until then, we will be engaged in a grassroots campaign to spread the word about the book and the important stories it tells regarding censorship on campus. Not only will getting the message out about how bad things have become on college campuses for once-cherished principles like free speech and due process help us fight back against campus abuses, but all proceeds from the book go to FIRE to help support this work.

Unlearning Liberty is the first book since The Shadow University, written by FIRE co-founders Alan Charles Kors and Harvey Silverglate, to attempt a far-reaching and large-scale exposition of insane cases of censorship and abuse of basic rights on college campuses. While there is no way that a book even ten times as long could do real justice to conveying the hundreds upon hundreds of cases FIRE has fought over the last 11 years (the course of my career), I highlight some comparatively well-known cases, including one in which a student was found guilty of racial harassment just for publicly reading a book and another where a Georgia student was expelled from his college for creating a collage protesting a parking garage. I also discuss some other lesser-known cases like a bizarre disciplinary program at Michigan State University that seemed plucked right from George Orwell's 1984. Though I am only able to cover a fraction of the worst FIRE cases, I believe there is no way any reasonable person could finish the book without saying to themselves, "something has really gone terribly wrong on our campuses."

In the coming weeks and months we will discuss the book's larger themes of how decades of campus censorship harms us all, but in the meantime I hope you will consider helping FIRE spread the word about the book and in doing so help us propel the issue of censorship on campus into the national dialogue once again. You can help by sending this link (http://fir.ee/M7g3Hi) to friends and family. We are determined to do everything in our power to make this book as big of a success as possible, and we could really use your help reaching that goal. I truly believe that if more people know about how bad things have gotten on campus for student rights, the push to reform them will be irresistible and unstoppable. Please help us make Unlearning Liberty a successful tool in the fight to restore freedom and sanity to our nation's campuses.
