A 2018 survey conducted by FIRE and YouGov analyzed 2,225 college students’ attitudes toward issues relating to expression, student fees and association on campus, civil rights and liberties, and the violent protests that occurred in Charlottesville, Va., in August 2017. The results of the survey show that almost all students think it is important their civil rights or liberties are protected, that the largest proportion of students think freedom of speech is the most important civil right or liberty, and that students more strongly support the rights of some groups to protest peacefully than others.
